There are lots of kinds of general anesthesia, from the kind you describe where you were probably intubated, to the simple sleep sedation that I got. That one was seriously like a nice, deep nap. Don't get me started on Russian medicine, though - my first memory is of how I got appendicitis with complications at age 3. The general anesthesia didn't work so well and I remember being partially awake for the surgery.
